Abandoned carts: why customers leave before checking out, and how to win them back

The customer visited your store, picked a product, added it to the cart, and reached the checkout page. Then they left. That is an abandoned cart, and it is the sale closest to you: someone who got to the last step, and who you don't need to convince from scratch.

This guide explains why it happens, when to send, what to write, and most importantly: the mistakes that make your message annoy the customer instead of bringing them back.

Why do customers abandon their carts?

The reasons that come up again and again in Saudi stores:

The difference between these reasons matters: someone with a question needs an answer, someone hesitating needs a reminder, and someone shocked by the shipping cost needs clear information before they reach checkout.

When to send

Timing matters more than the wording of the message itself. The practical rule:

Watch the sending timeA message at 2 a.m. does more harm than good. Set a suitable sending window, and let messages that fall outside it wait until morning.

What to write in the message

A successful message is short, reminds them of the product, and opens the door to a question. Don't start with a discount.

Example of the first message Hi Mohammed, we noticed you picked [product name] but didn't complete your order. The product is reserved for you, and you can complete your order here: [link]
And if you have any question about size or shipping, just tell me and I'll help.
Example of the second message Hi Mohammed, I just wanted to check whether something stopped you from completing your order. If you'd like me to suggest another size or explain the delivery time, I'm here.

Notice: neither message has pressure or a countdown. That's because most people who abandoned their cart have a clear reason, and when you ask, you learn the reason and solve it, and you gain information you can use to improve your store.

When to offer a discount

A discount is a tool, not a fixed step. If a discount becomes the norm for every abandoned cart, your customers will learn to abandon their carts and wait for the discount code.

Use it when the reason really is the price, with a new customer buying from you for the first time, or at the end of the season. And put it in the second message, not the first.

Mistakes that lose you the customer

How do you know it's working?

Don't measure by the number of messages sent. Measure:

And if you notice the same reason keeps coming up, like shipping, the real fix isn't a better message, it's making shipping clear on the product page before they reach checkout.

How does Karam do this?

Karam is connected to your store on Salla or Zid, so it knows about an abandoned cart the moment it happens:

  • An automatic WhatsApp message after the time you set, with the customer's name, the product name and a link back to their cart
  • It stops automatically if the customer replies or completes the order
  • If they reply with a question, the AI assistant answers from your store data, and hands over to your staff if a person is needed
  • Sending is official through Meta, away from unofficial sending methods that put your number at risk of being banned
